Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Johnson and Shelby Counties is one of the oldest insurance companies in the state of Indiana. It all began in 1894 when Samuel White and John VanArsdel of Shelby County and John Tilson, George Bryan and George Wilks of Johnson County gathered in the offices of the Adams & Carter Law Firm in Shelbyville, Indiana to start the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Shelby and Johnson Counties. The purpose of the company was to provide local farmers with fire insurance because none was available in rural areas.
Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Johnson and Shelby Counties is owned by its members, the policy holders. The policy holders elect a Board of Directors at the Annual Policy Holder Meeting held on the second Saturday in March each year.
There have been a lot of changes since the company's beginnings of covering only barns, outhouses and livestock. The company has grown from 54 policies in 1894 to more than 3,000 policies today. Even though the company has grown and now offers fire, wind and extended coverage, it still specializes in providing insurance to rural areas and providing quality customer service to our policy holders.
